Rubicon 2009 Off and Running

(Iserlohn, January 26, 2009) The preparations for this years’ Rubicon Contest are once again underway. The Rubicon Contest first established itself as a local newsmaker in 2006, when a group of students from BiTS, the Business Information Technology School in Iserlohn, Germany, decided to create a case-study-based competition for business students from all over the world. Since then, it has become a much-anticipated annual event, and this year is set to take place from the 9th to the 11th of March at Iserlohn’s Campus Seilersee.

While other students enjoy their semester break, one group of BiTSlers is busily putting together the annual business case study competition that attracts students from all over the world. This years’ focus: Green Business.

The Rubicon Contest is organized by the collegiate consultancy b.one e.V. While their fellow students are enjoying their semester holidays, a team of twelve students spends countless hours organizing the event and poring over every detail that brings them closer to achieving their prime objective: to provide the opportunity for an exchange of ideas and knowledge between 20 or so international teams, the university and leaders of the local economy through case studies focusing on a variety of entrepreneurial challenges. This year, the overarching topic, or leitmotif, is Green Business Management. Along with the knowledge gained from participating in the competition itself, teams will have the opportunity to win valuable prizes, as well as to take part in a diverse program highlighting local attractions.

The efforts of the organizers are strongly supported by the enterprises who serve as sponsors, and who value the opportunity Rubicon offers entrepreneurs to introduce their firms to, collect innovative impulses from, and network with highly motivated students from all over the world who are well-versed in many the skills needed to succeed in an internationally competitive environment. Business and Management Studies major Rouven Marquadt (25) is already in contact with interested companies. “We are a collegiate project, so everything has to be financed through sponsors. The financial crisis is a strong factor affecting the decisions businesses make right now. It is especially difficult now to secure funding for an event like this, while everyone is focused on saving money. But we have a solid and respected history behind us, and I am certain that we will attract enough enterprises to the cause.”

His fellow student Stephan Meier (23), the leader of the project, adds: “We thought about the current financial crisis as a topic, but we wanted to explore possible paths to a stable, sustainable future from a more long-term perspective. The topic Green Business, especially with regard to environmental technologies, is highly important in this context. Another major advantage of this theme is that we can rely on our instructors for support.”

Ilka Ohlmer (20) notices that the issue attracts interest all over the world. She is a first year Business Pschycology Student and is responsible for the supervision of all participating teams. “There are already teams that are interested from all over the world, for example India, Mexico, Spain and even Honduras. Sometimes I am really surprised how far the candidates are willing to travel, when I look at the map. Even though there are still six weeks to go, we already feel the international flair of the Rubicon Contest 2009.”

But we don’t just want to reach the universities and their students,” says Florian Hintze (26). He is a student in the BiTS Masters Program in Corporate Management and is responsible for the communications aspects of the event. “Organising Rubicon is an exciting and extremely interesting task. Everyday something new happens, challenging all of us. To offer a look behind the scenes, we decided to blog our daily life on our website (http://www.rubicon-contest.com/).” Interested individuals, teams, and schools are welcome to visit the organizing team there, and invited to send in their applications to take part in Rubicon 2009.
