“Hello! IT!...
...Have you tried turning it off and on again,” this famous phrase from the BBC comedy series “The IT crowd” dealing with the stereotypical IT-department I only said once – as a joke. Handing over a website is not really easy and not done by passing on important passwords. Technical Rubicon-Contest.com consists now of 5,878 files on the server, over 300 articles in two languages, several plugins and is having a lot of “switches” in the back office enabling the visitor to get the information on Rubicon Contest he or she needs. Over all: the page is a very important communication instrument for the competition. For me personally there is also an emotional site to it – I built it in the last three years by now.
In conclusion, there is no room for failure.
But time has come when I have to break up with “my” page, not being a student but an alumni at BiTS for a long time now.
In the last days I spent a lot of time to check if all parts of the CMS (Content-Management-System) Joomla, which is the technical basis for the site, are up to date, actually we were already running the newest version 1.5.22. But this work also included fixing minor errors or de-installing old plugins not needed any more. Some changes caused minor problems and some downtime at the page, hopefully nobody would have mentioned. If nothing occurs now, I was successful. I now know how the IT specialists in 1999 must have felt with the upcoming Y2K-bug. At the end nothing happened... actually well done folks.
Back to the topic: It is time for me to say goodbye to you – web page. May my successor treat you with respect and take care of you and please do not cause him any trouble. I do not want to repeat “Hello! IT!..”. |
