More Than Just A Competition

Held over 4 days – Students from all over the world – Coming together to create something you have never experienced before – Apply for the contest and be challenged by fellow campaigners. – August 29th to September 1st in Iserlohn, Germany


The Rubicon Contest is one of the most international Case Study Contests organized by students. It takes part during four days at Business and Information Technology School (BiTS) in Iserlohn. Young people from all over the world come together to compete in thrilling case studies and exchange ideas about future issues.


The case studies they solve deal with different economic problems. Parts of them are developed in cooperation with well-known companies. They put your expertise, analytical and innovative intellectual capacity to the test. An expert jury rates the solutions of the teams and decides the winner of the Rubicon Contest 2017 based on objective criteria.


First and foremost Rubicon means getting in touch with international students from all over the world. It is a platform for intensive exchange on the topics and ideas on the future of our economy. You will enhance your network by getting in touch with students and business representatives, go back home with new business cards in your pocket, and make new friends from all over the world.


As the organizers of the 11th Rubicon Contest we are proud to look back on a special success story and to be able to write the next chapter of this remarkable event. It is our deep wish to create an unforgettable event for everyone participating in Rubicon 2017. We are ready to make the Contest thrive another time by striking new ideas, an outstanding competition, and a relevant topic. This year the main focus will be on “Digitization“.



The next Rubicon will take place on August 29th to September 1st 2017 in Iserlohn, Germany - 11th anniversary!

The Rubicon Team

The students from BiTS behind Rubicon have been busy planning the event for a few months. Within the organizational team there are five areas:


Project Manager: The main person responsible for ensuring that Rubicon 2017 is a success. Coordinating and supervising the various organizational teams, solving problems, motivating members, and serving as a contact person for the community at large, are just a few of the tasks the Project Manager has to accomplish.


Sponsoring: The Rubicon Contest is determined by not only on the commitment of our students and participants, but also on the generous support of our partners. This team is responsible for contacting companies with attractive sponsoring concepts and providing liaison and support services throughout the event.


Event Management: From airport transfers, accommodation arrangements, gala dinner planning, to leisure program evelopment for the participants, the organizational talents behind the Event Management team make sure that the many interconnected parts of Rubicon function together seamlessly.


Team Management: Teams from the four corners of the world find their way to Iserlohn thanks to the hard work by this group, which manages the application process from the moment of first contact through to selection, as well as the mentoring every participating team receives during the competition.


Media Relations: Have you heard about the Rubicon Contest? That may well be thanks to this team's work, responsible for public relations and marketing. Whether on social media or press releases, Media Relations provides consistent information to a wide audience and keeps you up-to-date about the contest.

About the organizers e.V is a collegiate consultancy located at BiTS University. The consultancy was founded in 2001/2002 by Business and Management students Markus Kott and Andreas Tegeder in order to give students the possibility to deepen and extend their theoretical knowledge gained in lectures in a practical context. Since 2006, every Rubicon Contest has been planned and organized as well as supported by e.V.


Every year the Rubicon Contest is patronized by many economic business partners.


Without their support it would not be possible to realize the contest. We want to thank each one of them for their trust and hope for further excellent cooperations!

Deutsche Telekom’s Center for Strategic Projects (CSP) is going to support our event. CSP is Deutsche Telekom’s strategic in-house consultancy and is assigned directly to Deutsche Telekom’s CEO – Timotheus Höttges.

A very great jury will decide about the best case study team and makes this years Rubicon Contest possible. These are the members you'll have to convince:

Prof. Dr. Silke Hahn

Working concentrated on a project, tension within the teams from different nations - the Rubicon Contest brings all of that to the BiTS Iserlohn. Whether from Malays ia or Munich: Every team is excited in its own special way for this project and they all will do their best.

As a jury member I appreciate the international atmosphere during these exceptionally days. It is great to see with what spirit the academics get to work.


Prof. Dr. Daniel Kaltofen

Daniel Kaltofen is professor of Asset Management and Behavioural Finance at BiTS Iserlohn for several years. He is also academic vice rector and vice dean for the Finance and Management master program. His main fields of research are banking regulations as well as finance and investment. His case study experience covers expertise in topics with financial, strategic and entrepreneurial background.


Philipp Storch

Philipp Storch obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Management Studies at the Business and Information Technology School. Afterwards, he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Finance and Management with honours, by the Vossloh corporation. Besides his studies, he supported the university as a tutor in descriptive statistics, stochastics and managed the maths pre-courses at the university.

At present time, Philipp Storch is scientific assistant and lecturer for the courses „Finance & Investment”, as well as „Academic Operation” / „Dissertation”.


Andreas Tegeder

Andreas Tegeder has graduated from the Business and Information Technology School in 2005 with a Diploma in Business Administration. During his studies, he was the cofounder of the student consultancy e.V. and worked in this association for five years as a board member. Now, he is serving on the board of advisors at e.V. Tegeder began his career as a Financial Analyst for General Electric. Now he is working as a Financial Business Partner for Global Accounts at T-Systems International GmbH. As he was a member of the jury panel of Rubicon for several times, he has the indisputable know-how for business cases and their evaluation.


Marcel Walde

I have experienced the Rubicon contest as a truly exciting event for both the participants and the jury. I enjoyed being surrounded by so many highly motivated students from around the world. Furthermore, the overarching topic Internet of Things has tremendous importance for Deutsche Telekom as leading European telco player. I am already looking forward to the contest in August!


Laura Hellweg

It is my first time as a juror of Rubicon Contest. I’m really looking forward to meet all participants and to challenge their ideas. I’m convinced of the Rubicon concept and it’s a great chance for my department Center for Strategic Projects, Deutsche Telekom AG to get in contact with high potentials.


Dr. Ernst Stilla

Dr. Ernst Stilla is chief of human resource development and personnel marketing of the department HRP for corporate executives, education, human resource development at Deutsche Postbank AG. He is responsible for Talent- and Performance Management, Employer Branding, employee survey as well as for the conception and range of adequate seminary offers. His field of duty is influenced by some of Postbank’s substantial keystones such as digitalization. He is responsible for several tasks from finding qualified talents to the extension of digital training.


David Lucas

David Lucas studied Media Management in Bachelor and Marketing Management in Master at BiTS University for Applied Sciences. In 2010, he decided to take the challenge and founded a small media agency in cooperation with two of his fellows. Today, camalot media- The Brand Manufacturer - develops complex brand strategies for medium-sized and large companies all over Germany. David is Digital & Strategic Professional; he takes care of campaign management and brand development.


Dr. Konstantin Koll

Konstantin Koll has studied Computer Sciences at the Technical University of Dortmund and received his diploma in 2005. He enrolled in the PhD program, and graduated in 2009. Being a serial entrepreneur, he started his own company (again) with an exist seed grant from the European Union to turn his PhD thesis into a product. This is his second time on the Rubicon jury panel.


Sönke Kühl

Sönke Kühl is a manager with an international background whose style is result-oriented and sustainable. Currently he is a manager at the ESTB GmbH in Sümmern, Iserlohn. Key factors in his ways of working include his personal values of open communication, long-term relationships, integrity and permanent aim toward innovation. Composing powerful teams is a strength he has developed. A passion which is grown during years of experience in a variety of business disciplines.


Prof. Dr. Tessa Flatten

Professor Dr. Tessa Flatten is the head of the chair for technology and management at the Technical University Dortmund, Germany. Her research focus lies on entrepreneurship and innovation management, especially on the dynamic capabilities of companies in a turbulent environment. She gained her PhD at the Aachen University in the TIME area and holds courses in international entrepreneurship at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. Tessa Flatten is on the board of directors of Soptim AG and regularly consults young as well as established companies.


Christian Sturm

Christian Sturm studied business and chemistry at the Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany and at the Bond University, Australia. After graduating he joined The Boston Consulting Group and focused on strategy and transformation projects in the chemical industry. Currently, he is a research assistant at TU Dortmund University, Germany with special interest in entrepreneurial finance and personality research. He participated in international case study competitions and is teacher of a case study seminar.


Christina Muzzu

Christina Muzzu manages the English Curriculum Office at BiTS, is a lecturer for Marketing, and designs and co-teaches international academic initiatives, such as Global Subject and Collaborative Project, which connect BiTS students with their

Laureate colleagues throughout the world. Before joining BiTS, she specialized in disposition management at General Investment and Development in Boston and served

as a language specialist for the FBI.
